Becoming a pilot

What do you need to become a pilot?

Though many pilots are smart, you do not need to have special skills to start flying. If you want to learn how to fly, there are no real requirements besides being able to read, write, talk, and pass a medical test.

For commercial flying, requirements set by the flight schools are below what airlines require. In general, you should have at least a high school diploma or equivalent with good knowledge of maths and physics – as these are used all the time in flying.

For airlines, some may want you to have a two or four year degree from college but this is dependent on demand for pilots, company policy and the nationality of the airline. It is common for airlines to give you different tests (like an advanced IQ test) with an aviation psychologist, specially made for the aviation industry. Testing could take a couple of days and will evaluate your ability and potential as a pilot.

M1 Visa

Since September 11th, anyone who arrives in America whose MAIN intent for the trip is for training must have a valid M-1 Training Visa (or run the risk of detention and deportation).

To be eligible for an M-1 Visa, you will need to fill out a M-1 Training Visa application form (supplied by Orlando Flight Training). Once the centre has received the forms, the visa department will process the application and then FedEx the paperwork back within 5 working days. This paperwork must be placed with your passport and sent to the American Embassy. From receiving the passport and paperwork, the Embassy should take approximately 10 working days to return your passport with the visa enclosed.
